Description

Between Cepheus and Cygnus in a rich star field, NGC 6946 is a small(ish) starburst galaxy located about 22 million light-years distant.  The galaxy has a diameter of 40K light-years, and contains only about 1/2 the stars as compared to the Milky Way.   It contains quite a bit of gas and dust, with many magenta HII regions visible.   In this image, a very faint haze of additional stars rigns the galaxy beyond the prominent main arms.
